The Transformative Power of Smartphones for Older Adults

Transformative Power of Smart Phones

I recently worked with a small groups of amazing individuals, all in their 80s and 90s, with most of them still using a flip phone… can you believe it? At first, I thought figuring out a flip phone is probably tougher than using a smartphone. I had to help them!

I couldn’t let them continue on in the flip phone era. So, I took it upon myself to introduce them to the amazing world of smartphones. And let me tell you, they weren’t exactly thrilled about learning a new gadget. At first it seemed like a total hassle to them, and they said “Smartphones are too complicated, and not for us”.

But, I helped them see and learn that smartphones are the real deal — easy-peasy, super friendly, and will enhance and change their lives for the better.I focused on explaining to them how a smartphone is the perfect way for staying connected with family and friends through video chats, photo sharing and text messaging.

Once they got the hang of smartphones, it was a new world for them.Suddenly, they were sending and receiving pictures, and video calling their family! It wasn’t just a Game-changer, it was a LIFE CHANGER! Smartphones opened a whole new universe for them. Enhancing their life, and bringing more joy and overall happiness to them and their families.

Technology may not offer a solution for everything, and some argue that loneliness has worsened due to technology leading to a lack of human connection. However, technology proves beneficial for a specific group of individuals, mainly those who are homebound and have minimal human interaction. For them, technology facilitates the opportunity to connect with family members who live far away through daily photo sharing or video calls. In situations where a phone call may not always be feasible, a simple text can make a significant difference.
