Great Apps that Benefit Older Adults

Written by : Chloe Driscoll Wright

Navigating technology can be extremely tricky and sometimes seem futile. However, a lot of times it can prove beneficial as well as fun or relaxing to the lives of older adults—with advancements in tech, the little things are being made easier, and some easy-to-learn apps can be extremely useful.

Here are some I’ve found very helpful!

1. Medisafe

Remembering medication, especially in the early stages, can be tricky. Luckily, apps such as Medisafe are made to remind you of the specifics. As described on its website, “Medisafe’s Just-In-Time-Interventions technology enables targeted, personalized interventions to improve adherence and persistence.” The app also organizes ease of medication delivery and utilizes machine-based learning to gain a better understanding of patients’ needs.

2. Libby

For those in search of entertainment, Libby is a great option that acts as a digital library. With a library card from your local library, you will then be able to peruse E-books (digital) and audiobooks with ease. This is helpful when technological aid is needed or if staying home is the most efficient option. The app also offers a timeline and a shelf for organization.

3. Seek by iNaturalist

Have you ever seen a plant or animal whose species you wanted to learn, but couldn’t? The app Seek makes this easier, allowing you to snap a picture of the species, giving you its information to store as well as offering challenges. You may also set the camera to automatically take a picture once it recognizes a creature. This can be great as a source of information and entertainment!

Although technology is flawed, it still offers many uses such as those listed above. Organizations like the Helper Bears offer courses to anyone struggling, hoping to make positive change in the lives of older adults.
